Photography by Mourad Boulhana. Photography by Mourad Boulhana — Obscura and Atelier series on ritual, belief, and artists at work in Morocco.
This series explores how belief systems shape fear and the unknown. A masked figure made from recycled materials stands in a stark landscape, symbolizing moral ambiguity. The harsh textures represent communal expectations, while the figure’s ritualistic guise reflects the tension between morality and death. The work delves into how rituals tether us to ethics in the face of uncertainty.
I’m inspired by various African cultures, such as the Amazigh Bujloud and Berending Kumpo dance. In these traditions, sacred objects (such as masks, statues, and amulets) and ritual performances, like dances or sacrifices, are used to connect with the spiritual realm. These rituals can serve purposes ranging from protection to asking for prosperity and maintaining order.
Inside the Montresso Art Foundation studios, artists immerse themselves in creation. My photography captures these moments of focus, technique, and expression. Each frame tells a story of dedication, exploration, and the unseen layers of creativity.
